Good afternoon,

You are invited to engage with the process of developing the South African Renewable Energy Masterplan (SAREM).

The national masterplan process falls under the re imagined Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (dtic) led industrial strategy for South Africa.

It builds upon the approach taken by the automotive sector as well as the sector plan process developed between private- and public sectors, led by the Public Private Growth Initiative (PPGI) in conjunction with the Presidency. SAREM is one of 14 industry specific masterplans in progress since July 2019 when Minister Patel took over as Minister of dtic.

The masterplan development approach is a collaboration between industry, labour and government to develop an industrial plan for the sector. This includes setting out a vision for an industry in South Africa, identifying blockages and constraints, and proposing a set of key actions that need to be taken forward over the short and medium term. The masterplans essentially facilitate a process whereby industry commits to a certain amount of investment and creating a certain number of jobs against an industry masterplan. Government, for its part, undertakes to understand and remove impediments to these plans.

GreenCape is a non-profit company that works with businesses, investors, academia and government to help unlock the investment and employment potential of green technologies and services in Africa. GreenCape has undertaken to develop the SAREM with the endorsement of the dtic masterplan secretariat, DMRE and the PPGI. GreenCape has facilitated the inception phase of the project, developing a methodological approach in consultation with a wide spectrum of renewable energy industry representatives, including the South African Renewable Energy Council (SAREC) and other representative industry groupings, and others spanning organised labour, research institutions and civil society organisations.

In order to develop a plan that is valid and relevant, the project team would like to engage with experts and representatives of stakeholder groups for whom this plan is relevant, and to do so at intervals throughout the planning process.

The first of these, in which the vision will be developed, and the methodological approach presented, will take place via video webinar on 26th August 9h30-12h00. A detailed agenda and webinar login details to be provided following registration.

You are also invited to register your interest to participate in further upcoming engagements:
